2004 Music

2004 Music

In 2003 we got some smashing people along to play for you all at Fruitstock, which seemed to work out, so we decided to go for much the same formula this time round. We got some veterans back, like Rhythms of the City and Balangandan, alongside Fruitstock newcomer Ty (in the running for a Mercury Prize for his great album 'Upwards') and the winners of our very own Fruitstock talent competition, the irrepressible Smooth Hound Sharks. Here's what happened when.

saturday

Belleruche

Sublime vocals and atmospheric instrumentation from this talented London three-piece, consisting of singer, guitarist and DJ.

tony

Tony O’Malley

Tony sings the blues with a voice that doesn't sound dissimilar to the smoky velvety growl of the dear departed Barry White. Smooth.

Ray Gelato

Ray Gellato

Ray Gelato’s band has one mission and one mission only - to make you crawl out of the shade of the tree you were snoozing under and do some funny jazz dancing to his hard-bop sounds. You have been warned.

Jerry Fish

Jerry Fish

Jerry is a unique individual the only artist to play every day at this year’s Glastonbury, and full of mischief. Think of The White Stripes growing up in rural Ireland and listening to plenty of Sax, country and rhythm & blues and you’re pretty much there.

Samara

Samara

Steve Rubie founded the legendary 606 jazz joint, and has assembled an all star cast of Latin virtuosos to bring us a blend of samba, jazz, Latin and soul sounds.

Unsung Heroes

Unsung Heroes

Bradley (Dastardly) & B (Mr Shiver) play hip-hop jams that make you jump, and after a successful debut album are ready to blow the speakers once again. We might have to turn them down a bit

Rhythms Of The City

Rhythms Of The City

You can’t really go wrong with a 30 piece samba band, replete with eye-catching Brazilian dancers. They blew us away last year and we’re expecting more of the same again

sunday

Polar Bear

Polar Bear

Sebastian Rochford is a remarkable young drummer. His band will be exploring cutting edge jazz polyrhythms and experimental fusion and funk, which sounds complicated, but then it is jazz

Campbell Burnap

Campbell Burnap

The best jazz trombonist in the UK and well loved presenter for Jazz FM, Campbell Burnap will serenade us with his trad jazz sounds

Smooth Hound Sharks

Smooth Hound Sharks

Dan Canyon and the Horizontal Champion (aka the Bone Idols) are not your average UK Hip-Hop producers and this is reflected clearly in their sound - that perfect combination of refrigerator fresh and warmly familiar that doesn't come along very often. It is at turns soulful, quirky, laidback and energetic.

Polly Paulusma

Polly Paulusma

David Bowie and Bob Dylan have championed Polly’s music, and it’s fairly easy to see why. She plays beautiful folk/pop and recently supported Jamie Cullum.

Rachel Calladine

Rachel Calladine

One of British jazz’s most distinctive voices, Rachel is back this year with a mix of soul and nu jazz. Expect to hear some of her own stuff as well as some great covers.

Balangandan

Balangandan

They may have an unpronounceable name, but they made us dance hard at last yearâs Fruitstock, so there was little reason not to ask them back to play again. Their mix of classic Afro-Cuban, Latin/Jazz and salsa will have you reaching for the nearest mojito.

Ty

Ty

Ty makes the finest hip hop, period. His debut album 'Awkward' garnered the love of the street cognoscenti and the acclaim of the critics, and heâs been rehearsing hard with his 8 piece band to bring us one big hip hop jam
